The Band and Corps of Drums of the Bermuda Regiment has been a constant in the Bermuda community.  Since its inception on the amalgamation of the Bermuda Militia Artillery and the Bermuda Rifles, the Band, as it is affectionately called, has held its place with honour and commitment.  Since 1965, it has played for all state and ceremonial functions here in Bermuda.

With musicians ranging in age from as young as 16 all the way up to 61, its membership is quite diverse.  The 35 part-time and dedicated musicians who comprise the Band juggle their regular employ as engineers, mechanics, executives and tradesmen—among other occupations—with a demanding military schedule which oft times sees them performing up to 4 or 5 times in a single week.  Their love for playing is demonstrated in the sacrifice they make in their personal lives to ensure that the Band is well represented.

The camaraderie among the musicians is clearly evident.  The average length of service among its members is somewhere in the region of 15 years, thus the traditions are great; and these traditions are passed on to newer members who are made to feel very welcome, but equally held to task about what is expected as a musician in the Band.

While its primary responsibility is to provide service music for the battalion and the Government locally, the Band has had the privilege to travel quite extensively.  In 2008 they traveled to Adelaide, Southern Australia to participate in the Southern Australia Police Tattoo. 2005 saw them in Bremen, Germany for the Musikschau der Nationen; that same year the Bermuda Regiment celebrated its 40 anniversary with the Bermuda Tattoo in which the Band and Corps of Drums was the host Band.

Other tours included training and performances in Jamaica, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom with two most notable undertakings being the famed Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2003 and a tour of the Far East in 1991.

H.M. Queen Elizabeth, II has had the good fortune of being entertained by the Band on a number of occasions with the most recent being a Royal Visit to Bermuda in 1994.  Similarly, H.R.H. Princess Anne, The Princess Royal was given a command performance in front of Commissioner’s House and was reacquainted with the Band at their performance in Edinburgh in 2003.

Capt. Dwight Robinson, the Director of Music, is a 1998 graduate of Clark Atlanta University, graduating magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education.  He also completed the intensive Bandmaster’s Course at the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall in 2003.

The Band is involved in many public and private performances which include  convention work and charitable and sporting events.  It serves the people of Bermuda with uncompromising pride. It is with great pleasure that the Band plays host to the international performing units on home soil at the Bermuda Tattoo.
